X-ray and Optical Observations of the Supernova Remnant CTB1
Abstract
We present preliminary results from a multi-wavelength study of the supernova remnant CTB1. We have obtained optical spectra at positions throughout the southern rim of the remnant. These spectra, which were obtained using a fiber-fed multi-object spectrograph, cover the bandpass from 4700 Angstroms to 6900 Angstroms. The line ratios as derived from the optical spectra indicate that CTB1 is a typical middle-aged supernova remnant with little variation in reddening. The spectra also demonstrate a possible selection effect that may affect estimates of the ages of these type of remnants. We also present ROSAT PSPC pointings of both the center of CTB1 and a possible breakout region to the north east. The remnant is clearly visible in the images making this the first X-ray detection of this object. The PSPC images of CTB1 do not appear to show the typical limb-brightening characteristic of some other remnants of this type.
